'Frida and the butterflies'
‘I am not sick. I am broken. But I am happy to be alive as long as I can paint’ Frida Kahlo
I recently went to Bali and stumbled upon THE most beautiful place I’ve ever been in. I didn’t want to leave. From the golden lighting, the tiles of my dreams, organic vegetarian food, beautiful statues, flowers and artwork of Frida Kahlo all over the place. I thought ‘this is how I want my life to feel’
So in the spirit of experimenting and putting emotion into my art, I chose to use similar tiles in the background to the ones I loved at the cafe, I painted Frida in bold colours, and I added butterflies because she was a huge lover of nature and the butterfly to me is a symbol of transformation.
I used gold leaf on her jewellery to make it stand out and to capture that golden lighting feel.
To be honest this is so different to what I usually paint, I never paint detail like I have in the tiles and I don’t usually put so much thought into a composition.
To me, art should be about capturing a feeling and an emotion and that place was something I want to work towards, to live in a house like that one day, to feel like that more often.
I know, I can get pretty deep, it was just a cafe 😂
But Frida Kahlo is a very inspiring woman, fantastic artist and maybe I resonate with her so much because she overcame illness and her art was what helped heal her.'
